Lowey
Amendment Providing Contraceptive Coverage To Federal Employees "Just Makes
Sense"
|
|
|
WASHINGTON
- June 18 - Statement by Gloria Feldt
President, Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Planned Parenthood is encouraged by the House Appropriations
Committees adoption of the Lowey Amendment, which would ensure that federal
employees benefits plans will cover prescription contraceptives in the same manner that
they cover other prescription drugs.
Contraceptive coverage just makes sense. If you want to prevent the need for abortion, it
is only common sense to make contraception more available. That is why contraceptive
coverage legislation has such broad support from both sides of the aisle, and from
people on both sides of the abortion issue.
Passage of the Lowey Amendment is a small, but encouraging step toward fairness for women.
We hope it is a first step toward contraceptive coverage, not just for federal employees,
but for everyone with insurance that covers prescription drugs. The Equity in Prescription
Insurance and Contraceptive Coverage Act (EPICC), introduced a year ago, has yet to
receive a hearing. We hope that passage of the Lowey Amendment presages action on EPICC.
