Women Grassroots Leaders To Meet In Portland, Maine July 31- August 2 To Forge Plans To Secure America's Economic Future | ||
| WASHINGTON - July 28 - Grassroots women leaders from advocacy and
community groups across the country will convene in Portland, Maine, on July 31 to form
strategies to capitalize on the economic potential of American women and ensure America's
future economic growth. A pre-conference briefing for news media is scheduled for July 31.
Women today make a majority of consumer decisions, add $2.3 trillion to the economy every year and are a majority of voters. Yet, a woman on average earns only 74 cents for every dollar a man makes, most women earn less than $25,000 a year and women are still outnumbered in legislatures and board rooms. Participants at the Portland meeting, co-sponsored by the Center for Policy Alternatives (CPA), the Maine Women's Lobby & Development Institute and the Rockefeller Family Fund, will build networks across state lines to move a women-led economic agenda nationwide that closes the gap between women's real economic power and unrealized economic potential. The Portland meeting is critical for action in Maine and across the U.S. on a wide range of issues from fair pay to child care, from health care to entrepreneurship. A media briefing at 4:45 p.m., July 31, will be provided by CPA President and CEO Linda Tarr-Whelan, also U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women; Maine Women's Lobby Executive Director Laura Fortman; and Maine Senate Majority Leader Chellie Pingree. WHAT: Media Briefing -- Women's Grassroots Leadership Conference WHO: Linda Tarr-Whelan, President and CEO, the Center for Policy Alternatives Laura Fortman, Executive Director, Maine Women's Lobby & Development Institute Maine State Senator Chellie Pingree WHERE: Portland, Maine, City Hall, Room 209 WHEN: 4:45 p.m., July 31, 1998 # # # |
