| Fight to Save Constitution and Presidency Moves to the Senate; Voters Angry at Impeachment | ||||
| WASHINGTON
- December 19 - People For the American Way today announced that it will carry the fight
against impeachment begun before the November elections on to the Senate on
behalf of American voters who are infuriated at the House vote today to overturn
their election of President Clinton.
"The House of Representatives is in contempt of the people," said Carole Shields, President of People For the American Way. "They've been ignored, disenfranchised, shouted down and ruled out of order by the people they elected to represent them. And they're frantic to make the Senate listen to them." People For pledged to continue providing a megaphone for the people to help get their voice heard in Washington, as it has throughout the fall elections and the impeachment action in the House. People For's efforts have included paid and public service advertising and internet organizing linked to toll-free links to Congress, as well as grassroots organizing activity. "The Republican House leadership made the political calculation that their extreme right wing base will remember in 2000 what they did today and that everyone else will forget," said People For's Political Director Mike Lux. "The calls we're getting from angry voters tell us that the people may be about to give the GOP a lesson in higher math." At a news conference called to respond to the impeachment vote, People For released "America's Most Betrayed," a list of Congressional Districts that voted to elect Clinton President but whose Members of Congress today voted to impeach him. People For the American Way said that its affiliated Political Action Committee, the People For the American Way Voters Alliance, will focus special attention on these districts for 2000 to help assure that these betrayed voters have a progressive alternative on the ballot. ### |
