| Women's Leader Says House Should Censure, Not Impeach | ||||
| WASHINGTON - December 14 - Statement
by Judith L. Lichtman "Last week's House impeachment proceedings were unnecessary, unfortunate, and unbecoming to this nation and our political system. The American people, who elected Clinton to office, have been offended by this blatantly partisan and seemingly endless spectacle. Along with most Americans, we recognize that Bill Clinton is a flawed person and believe that he ought to pay a price for his shameful behavior. That is why we have consistently supported censure. Given the nature of the conduct, censure is the appropriate remedy. Therefore, we call once again on the House to vote for censure and against impeachment, and bring a just and swift end to this destructive process. We must not allow our disappointment and anger to make a bad situation worse. Women, in particular, cannot afford to disengage from the political process -- we have too much at stake. From health care to education to social security, the issues we care about transcend the issue of who occupies the Oval Office. When we elect officials who share our views about what really matters, they must be allowed to do their jobs. Otherwise, we will have let this President's moral failures cost us a government that represents us. That is too high a price to pay. # # # The National Partnership for Women & Families, formerly the Women's Legal Defense Fund, is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that promotes fairness in the workplace, quality health care, and policies that help women and men meet the dual demands of work and family. |
