| Workers in The United States Still Suffer From Hunger | ||||
| WASHINGTON
- December 7 - Statement by David Beckmann, President of Bread for the
World:
Bread for the World is deeply concerned with increasing hunger in the United States, particularly given the nation's past eight years of sustained economic growth. Low-income workers in this country need raises. Despite record-low levels of unemployment, millions of workers in this country still do not earn enough to feed their families. Forty percent of the 21 million people using Second Harvest emergency food banks in 1997 were from working families. More than half of the children under the age of 12 who go hungry live in households where at least one family member is employed. It is shocking to think that all of this is happening at a time when our economy is flourishing. But it is especially alarming to think about the prospects that await low-income workers when the next, inevitable recession strikes. # # # Bread for the World is a 44,000 member Christian citizens' movement against hunger. Founded in 1974, Bread for the World's members lobby Congress and the administration to bring about public policy changes that address the root causes of hunger and poverty in the United States and overseas. Bread for the World is a non-partisan organization sponsored by 45 denominations and many theological perspectives. |
