American Friends Service Committee Statement On The U.S. Military Strikes In Sudan and Afghanistan
WASHINGTON - August 21 -

We deplore the loss of life caused by these bombings that have resulted in the deaths of people in the Sudan and Afghanistan and we challenge the concept that a series of violent actions will in any way reduce the ability of terrorist organizations to operate in the world arena. AFSC believes that retaliatory air strikes against targets in Sudan and Afghanistan represent an unwarranted escalation of tensions that will dramatically undermine the security of the U.S.

In a letter to President Clinton (August 13, 1998), AFSC called on the US to reject any actions that answer the violence with violence in seeking justice for the US embassy bombings in Africa. Any form of blanket punishment only engenders deeper resentments and works against the possibility of reconciliation. Such actions feed prejudice and intolerance based on nationality that is destructive to efforts to build a peaceful and more just world. Rather, we believe that the US should work through established international legal channels to bring terrorists to justice.

The American Friends Service Committee urges all those who are concerned about retaliatory violence against terrorism to call President Clinton at 202-456-1111.

The American Friends Service Committee is a Quaker organization which includes people of various faiths who re committed to social justice, Peace and humanitarian service. Its work is based on the belief in the worth of every person, and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.
