Common Cause Statement on Passage of Shays-Meehan Bill | ||
| WASHINGTON - August 6 - Following is a statement of Common Cause
President Ann McBride on final passage of the Shays-Meehan bill by the House of
Representatives: Today's vote marks an extraordinary victory for the bill that will not die. A bright spotlight now shifts to the United States Senate. Winning in the Senate is a difficult fight, but winning in the House was given little chance this year as the Shays-Meehan bill was repeatedly declared dead. A majority of the United States Senate is already on record for the same bill that just passed the House. Common Cause and a broad coalition of groups are immediately launching a major grassroots campaign to press the Senate to pass the Shays-Meehan-McCain-Feingold legislation in September. A Trent Lott-led obstructionist filibuster cannot not be allowed to stand in the way of bipartisan majorities in both the House and Senate and the nine out of 10 Americans who want reform. Today's vote is a remarkable achievement which will provide sustained momentum until real campaign finance reform is signed into law. We applaud the extraordinary leadership of Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.), Marty Meehan (D-Mass.), Tom Campbell (R-Calif.), Sander Levin (D-Mich.), and the House Democratic leadership. We also thank other members of the House who made reform possible, including those who stood up to pressure and voted for reform. -0- |
