| WASHINGTON - August 3 - Following is astatement by Common Cause
President Ann McBride on Passage of the Shays-Meehan proposal: Tonight's vote on the Shays-Meehan proposal represents an historic moment on campaign finance reform. This vote sends a strong message that the current system is fundamentally discredited, and that the scandals of the last elections must end. This vote also sends a message of hope to the American people --showing that citizens can make a difference and that there are still real heroes in politics today. Reform opponents have tried every poison pill, every parliamentary trick and every procedural shenanigan to derail reform. So far, theyhave failed. All remaining alternatives must now be quickly disposed of so that Shays-Meehan can be sent to the Senate. We commend Representatives Chris Shays (R-Conn.) and Marty Meehan (D-Mass.) for their skilled and courageous leadership -- leadership that is in the best tradition of our nation. We thank the many Members from both sides of the aisle who joined together to stand up for the American people and worked to pass the proposal. We call on the House Republican leadership to complete final action on campaign finance reform before the August recess. -0- |
