Ron Johnson's Embrace of Trump's Anti-Immigrant Bigotry Ensures They'll Both Lose Wisconsin

Latinx vote will decide 2016 elections, and Wisconsin Latinxs are mobilizing for Feingold and Clinton

WASHINGTON

Speaking to a Green Bay Press Gazette reporter last Thursday, Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson called Donald Trump's anti-immigrant policies "common sense." Voces de la Frontera Action issued the following response:

"Johnson's embrace of Trump's anti-immigrant bigotry and fear-mongering further drives Latinx voters against him and the Republican Party and ensures Johnson and Trump's defeat on November 8th," said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera Action. "Latinx voters are a growing constituency in Wisconsin and Johnson is motivating them to turn out against him. The Republican Party strategy to scapegoat immigrants, Latinxs, and people of color will lead to their defeat as happened in 2012."

"According to the American Immigration Council, if all Wisconsin's undocumented immigrants were removed, we would lose more than 14,000 jobs, $2.6 billion in economic activity, and over $100 million in state and local taxes. Wisconsin's dairy industry depends on immigrant workers. You can't support the dairy industry and be anti-immigrant. Many Republicans recognize that, yet Johnson voted against immigration reform and has obstructed policies to protect immigrant families from deportation. His voting record does not reflect Wisconsin values like fair treatment, hard work, and strong families. He needs to go."

"Voces de la Frontera Action members are talking to thousands of Latinx voters to ensure they vote for Hillary Clinton for President and Russ Feingold for US Senate, because neither Trump nor Johnson are deserving of Latinxs' votes. Latinx voters will decide the 2016 elections and their influence as voters is growing quickly. The Republican Party's extremist, bigoted platform means that their political future is doomed."

Voces de la Frontera is Wisconsin's leading immigrant rights group - a grassroots organization that believes power comes from below and that people can overcome injustice to build a better world.
