WISCONSIN

In response to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's anti-immigrant comments published Tuesday, Voces de la Frontera issued the following statement:

"It is shameful for Gov. Walker to continue his flip-flop to the extreme right when it comes to justice for immigrants and working families," said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. "By announcing his support for restrictions on legal immigration and aligning himself with Sen. Sessions, the leader of the nativist wing of the Republican Party, Gov. Walker has showed his true colors. It is ridiculous for this Governor to advance restrictions on immigration as a measure to protect US workers, when his own actions demonstrate his disregard for the plight of working class families in Wisconsin.

"He has driven down wages across our state by taking away public sector workers' right to collective bargaining, by attacking collective bargaining rights for private sector workers, and now by trying to repeal Wisconsin's prevailing wage law. Gov. Walker is cutting billions from public education and the UW system and he is kicking people off FoodShare and BadgerCare. His governorship has been a disaster for working families in Wisconsin, immigrant and US-born alike, and no amount of trying to pit communities against one another can divert attention from his shameful record.

"Gov. Walker has also used our tax money in a frivoluous lawsuit in an effort to block new measures that would protect undocumented parents of US citizens and Legal Permanent Residents from the threat of deportation, as well as many young people brought to the US as children. Our movement won this victory, and no politician pandering to extremists can take it from us. This May 1st, we call on community members to join us in marching to demand the implementation of administrative relief now, passage of immigration reform with a path to citizenship, funding for public education, living wages, and the restoration of collective bargaining rights for all workers."

Voces de la Frontera is Wisconsin's leading immigrant rights group - a grassroots organization that believes power comes from below and that people can overcome injustice to build a better world.
