Veterans’ Group Responds to President Obama’s Call to War
Saint Louis - September 12 - A leading peace organization of military veterans responded to President Obama’s address to the nation in his effort to justify bombing Syria to punish the Assad regime for their alleged use of chemical weapons.
The Veterans For Peace statement while condemning, “the use of all chemical weapons, as well as the targeting of civilians with conventional weapons” also strongly opposes U.S. military intervention, “whether direct or indirect, in the civil war that is currently raging in Syria.”
Pressing the president to pursue recent diplomatic opportunities provided by Russia and Syria that will lead to disposal of Syria’s chemical weapons, the group states that if the current initiative fails, diplomacy and holding those accountable via following international law is the answer to the crisis - “not U.S. military intervention which will certainly lead to more lives lost.”
Veterans For Peace urges its members and the general public to contact Congress and the president to stop the bombing of Syria and increase diplomatic efforts. The veterans group is participating in and organizing protests actions, vigils and educational events to motivate the public to stand against military intervention and to push for diplomacy.
