Labor Groups Embracing Documentary Film: Heist: Who Stole the American Dream?
Praised By NY Times As ‘Persuasive,’ Explosive Film Traces Destruction of the Middle Class To 1971 Memo And Actions By Both Major Parties
Berkeley, CA. - February 20 - Major Labor organizations including the United Steel Workers, the United Auto Workers, Communication Workers of America, California Teachers Association and the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters are partnering with Connecting the Dots Productions, the maker of the explosive documentary feature HEIST, to educate their members about the policies that have targeted labor organizations and the middle class for destruction over the last 40 years.
Larry Cohen, President of the Communication Workers of America writes:
HEISTis outstanding, even gripping, as the film documents our slide towards a wealth-based nation, robbing working class families of our power, our voice, our dignity and our dreams. Watch it, treasure it, pass it on to every activist you know. It helps us feel the power of organizing when we Stand Up and Fight Back!
Amidst the backdrop of the deepening dysfunction in Wall Street and Washington, HEIST, co-directed and co-produced by former CNN producer Frances Causey and documentary filmmaker/community psychiatrist Donald Goldmacher, is deeply connecting with labor audiences at house parties and union halls. HEIST is providing union leaders and members with a clear, concise and fact-based explanation of how we got into this mess, and what we need to do to restore unions and thus our representative democracy.
Steve Early, labor journalist and author says:
Thousands of shop stewards have seen and discussed HEIST in the training sessions held by CWA and other unions as part of the 99% Spring. This film is an invaluable educational tool for labor and community groups that want to do membership and public education about the abuses of corporate power in America. HEIST tells a story that continues to be mis-represented or ignored by too much of our corporate dominated mainstream media. If Capitalism: A Love Story had a sequel this would be it!
Acting as a touchstone for unions, the film traces the economic collapse of 2008 to a 1971 secret memo, written by future Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell at the request of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The memo entitled Attack on American Free Enterprise System is a free-market utopian treatise, calling for a money fueled big business makeover of government through corporate control of the media, academia, the pulpit, arts and sciences and destruction of organized labor and consumer protection groups. HEIST’S step-by-step detail exposes the systemic implementation of Powell's memo by BOTH U.S. political parties over the last forty years, culminating in the global financial crisis of 2008 and the continued dismantling of the American middle class. Indeed, today's crisis and heart stopping headlines can be directly traced to Powell's real “end game”, successfully concluded, which was business control of law and politics.
