Activists Demand Susan Rice End Keystone XL Conflict
WASHINGTON - November 30 - A national online group with nearly 200,000 members launched a campaign Friday demanding that U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice sell "every dollar of stock" in Canadian firms that stand to reap huge profits if the proposed Keystone XL pipeline is approved.
A potential nominee for Secretary of State early next year, Rice would be a key decision-maker for the pipeline in that post.
Calling the conflict of interest "outrageous" and "intolerable," RootsAction.org declared in an email sent to its membership nationwide:
"It's indefensible that Rice has millions of dollars invested in oil companies and banks that will make huge profits if the State Department gives approval to the XL pipeline. As a high-ranking administration official -- and a potential replacement for Hillary Clinton early next year to run the State Department -- Susan Rice shouldn't have any stake in corporations that are doing all they can to plunder tar sands in Canada and send carbon emissions soaring even faster."
