Amnesty International Welcomes Obama’s Efforts to Provide Immediate Relief to Young Immigrants But Warns Measure is Temporary
Human Rights Organization Urges Congress to Swiftly Pass DREAM Act
WASHINGTON - June 15 - Frank Jannuzi, the head of Amnesty International’s Washington office, issued the following statement in response to reports that President Barack Obama will issue an executive order that will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to young undocumented immigrants who arrived as children:
"Amnesty International welcomes President Obama’s steps to relieve the plight of undocumented children and their uncertain futures, but it is a temporary measure. Immigrant children and their families, and the country as a whole, deserve a permanent solution, not tomorrow or after the election, but right now."
"Amnesty International urges Congress to pass the 2011 version of the DREAM Act as well as address other urgent issues facing migrant communities and undocumented individuals."
