The Affordable Care Act: An Appeal to the Repealers
WASHINGTON - March 23 - Mary Kay Henry, President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing more than 2.1 million working families dedicated to quality, affordable healthcare for all issued the follow statement today on the two-year anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act.
"Today, millions of working families across America are saying 'thank you' for the Affordable Care Act as it continues to deliver on its vision of providing quality, affordable, secure healthcare to all, regardless of age, race, income, faith or profession. The law is the great equalizer - no one man or woman is more or less deserving than another. In the eyes of the Affordable Care Act, there is no 1% or 99%. There are only Americans who all deserve an equal chance to live longer, healthier lives.
"The Affordable Care Act is working. If you care about the future of this country, move on to a real challenge. Stop playing politics with the health of Americans and stop engaging in threats in the form of lawsuits, refusal of federal dollars and legislative foot dragging. That will not make America great; it will make us broke and sick.
"If you are running false ads against the Affordable Care Act, stop them. If you are undermining the foundation of Medicaid and Medicare and attempting to embarrass American taxpayers and veterans who depend upon on these essential services, take a moment and remember who built this country.
"While this week underscored that Republican extremists in Congress are happy to continuing stacking the deck against our struggling middle-class and aging parents and grandparents, I would appeal to leaders in our government who truly want America to recover from this recession to focus on what matters most: creating good jobs."

Show AllIn relation to Karen Marlene Rebb’s rosy outlook, it is taken along the same lines as Michael Moore’s turning of support toward this (corporate) sham (Without a Public Option): “Pass it because, if President Obama takes a fall on this one, I don’t know if he’ll be able to get back up.” He also viewed (sold) the “stepping stone” aspect as a road to "Single-Payer/Medicare for All." What are the Actual chances of that? Review the history of our government since Reagan and (if you didn’t already) you will have the answer.
Further, regarding Rebb’s “positive points” (“acquire affordable health insurance/care” definitely not being one of them, since, of course, it is an outrageous and insulting statement) there was another Humane/Progressive way to achieve many goals: they could have been, and still could be, implemented – Without forcing a Mandate to Buy corporate insurance. The word is Regulation. The insurance companies could have been regulated into those aspects – Without the Mandate. It should also be noted additionally and predominantly: her response was no different than Mary Kay Henry’s PR Release. Spin. Spin. Spin. Orwellian Word and Fact Games (purposely ignoring all alternatives which were, and are, being overridden.)
Example: Everyone will be Forced to “acquire” health insurance from a corporate entity – or face substantial penalties with/from the full force of the government. “Acquir[ing]” will be noted as/relentlessly referred to as “Providing.” And, an “Affordable” New Monthly/Yearly Bill will be sold as/relentlessly referenced as (somehow?) a New Reality – especially to/for those who did not have health insurance before, because they could not spare a single penny further in their bootstrapped lives.
Candidate Obama: “If a mandate was a solution, we could try that to solve homelessness by mandating everyone buy a house.” Period.
Congressman Kucinich: “Government of the people or a government of the corporations[?]” Period.

Since you mention Kucinich, SeaClearly, this was essentially his rationale for reneging on his promises and supporting Obamacare.
Whatever considerations were presented during Kucinich's infamous ride on Air Force One-- the political equivalent of Satan taking Jesus up on the mountaintop to make him an offer he couldn't refuse-- Kucinich afterwards stated that he felt that to vote against Obamacare would put him in the company of those who were determined to bring down Obama's "historic presidency".
The phrase "historic presidency" is not just a passing rhetorical turn; it expresses a classic liberal sensibility.
It's tragic, ironic, and contradictory that Kucinich felt compelled to piously support Obama's "historic" presidency in accordance with traditional liberal pro-civil rights values, even if it meant supporting an authoritarian Unitary Executive who's eagerly and unequivocally furthered the voracious Constitution-shredding and extinction of civil liberties begun by his predecessor, and persistently promoted the interests of the wealthy and bankster class at the expense of the ordinary unprivileged citizen.
Also, thanks for the well-informed and forceful rebuttal to the talking point that Obamacare represents a genuine and worthwhile "baby step" towards true universal health care.
As far as Kucinich's sellout after making one of the Truest and Boldest stands -- his turn at that point, just like Michael Moore's, was one that will never be forgotten.
Howard Dean (before selling out): “This is essentially the collapse of health care reform in the United States Senate. Honestly the best thing to do right now is kill the Senate bill, go back to the House, start the reconciliation process, where you only need 51 votes and it would be a much simpler bill.” http://seaclearly.wordpress.com/2009/12/15/kill-the-health-care-bill-sav...
Michael Moore (while selling out): “Within days, the House of Representatives will vote to pass the Senate health care ‘reform’ bill. This bill is a joke. It has NOTHING to do with ‘health care reform.’ It has EVERYTHING to do with lining the pockets of the health insurance industry. It forces, by law, every American who isn’t old or destitute to buy health insurance if their boss doesn’t provide it. What company wouldn’t love the government forcing the public to buy that company’s product?!”
Candidate Obama on Mandates: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoSnqofelsQ President Obama (after already having made secret deals to Kill the Public Option): 'It's 'only' "one sliver" 'of the health care plan.'
As I wrote back then: Let us not accept pure spin, while we’re being sold out, as “the good.” Let us not forget that what was absolutely possible – in a present tense, is now referred to as “the perfect” – in a past tense.
