Background: Unless President Obama reverses course, oil drilling will begin in the pristine Arctic Ocean this summer -- opening this fragile home of polar bears, walrus, seals and native communities to dangerous new oil exploration and our rapidly warming climate to even more global warming pollution.

President Obama has already given tentative approval to Shell's Arctic drilling plan, but citizens and "Frostpaw" the polar bear plan to use Obama's visit to San Francisco on Thursday to ask him to stop Shell from drilling in the Arctic.

At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.
