ACLU Says Denial of Clemency for Troy Davis Exemplifies Death Penalty’s Systemic Injustices
Execution in Face of Serious Doubts Unconscionable and Unconstitutional
ATLANTA - September 20 - The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles today denied clemency to Troy Davis, despite serious concerns that he was wrongly convicted of killing a police officer in 1989.
“The refusal today by the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to grant Troy Davis clemency underscores the vast systemic injustices that plague our death penalty system,” said Denny LeBoeuf, director of the ACLU Capital Punishment Project. “No innocent person should ever be put to death, and it is unconscionable and unconstitutional to carry out an execution where, as in Troy’s case, significant doubts exist. The death penalty system in the United States is arbitrary, discriminatory and comes at an enormous cost to taxpayers, and it must be ended.”
ACLU policy counsel Tanya Greene is available for television interviews using the ACLU's in-house studio facility, which has an outbound fiber line for standard definition (SD) video.

Show AllThis is not simply a miscarriage of justice, it is racism, pure and simple. This is a black man, who has been convicted in a kangaroo court of killing Whitey's symbol of racial enforcement, a policeman.
Bottom line: The people of Georgia are sanctioning this lynching. I am no longer doing business with, or purchasing any goods or services which are in any way related to the State of Georgia. I sincerely believe that an economic boycott is a really peachy way to convey the message that state-sanctioned lynching is no longer acceptable. Please join me and BOYCOTT GEORGIA!
