Food & Water Watch Applauds Governor Quinn’s Protection of Public Water
Statement of Food & Water Watch Midwestern Organizing Director Alex Beauchamp
CHICAGO, IL - August 30 - “Governor Pat Quinn’s decision to sign SB 83 into law today is a victory for Illinois citizens who want control of their water systems. The people of Illinois have a right to publicly control their drinking water and wastewater service in order to keep it safe and affordable, and SB 83 protects this right.
“State Representative Emily McAsey’s Senate Bill 83 is a bipartisan measure that makes it easier for municipalities to purchase and operate their own water system. Representative McAsey fought to allow local control of water systems in response to Illinois American Water’s poor treatment of customers and continued rate hikes.
“Studies have shown that privately owned water service is more expensive and inferior to publicly owned systems. Many communities in Illinois, such as Homer Glen, Lemont, Romeoville, Woodridge and Bolingbrook have been fighting to take back control of their water. The passage and signature of SB 83 is a huge victory for those communities.
“We applaud Representative McAsey and Governor Quinn for standing up for the right to publicly owned and operated water.”
