CCR Statement Against the Pence Provision

NEW YORK

The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) issued a statement condemning the Pence provision, passed in the House of Representatives today as part of the contentious budget bill, and continued efforts by Republican members of Congress to defund Planned Parenthood, a major healthcare provider serving women and families in low-wealth communities and communities of color.

The Center for Constitutional Rights condemns the continued malicious and misleading attacks on Planned Parenthood that expose a cynical and coldhearted willingness to further a divisive political agenda at all costs. If the Pence provision moves forward as part of Congress' budget bill, it will inevitably have a devastating impact on public health by denying health centers across the country federal funding by eliminating lifesaving, preventive and primary care services for the most vulnerable communities that include millions of individuals and families of all ages and genders.
CCR believes that healthcare is a human right and that access to healthcare is an integral part of a health democracy and social justice. The Pence provision, which would deny healthcare to millions of Americans, is a poorly veiled attempt to target the poorest and most vulnerable in our society and embodies the extreme right's agenda.
We urge members of the Senate and President Obama to oppose the Pence provision and stand with the vast number of Americans, families and people of conscience to support family planning and access to health care and protect Planned Parenthood and other critically important healthcare providers from elimination.

The Center for Constitutional Rights is dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. CCR is committed to the creative use of law as a positive force for social change.
