Results of BOEMRE’s BP Atlantis Investigation Whitewash Critical Safety Issues
Statement of Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter
WASHINGTON - March 4 - “Two years after whistleblower Ken Abbott first brought the safety problems with BP’s Atlantis Facility to light, The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) has finally released the findings of its investigation of Abbott’s claims. The results were not worth the wait.
“This investigation was the agency’s opportunity to prove its dedication to improving industry safety standards. Instead, it chose to fall back on old habits, protecting the interests of its industry cronies, rather than the public. The report is seriously flawed and reflects a clear bias.
“Although the report admits serious document deficiencies regarding the platform’s operation, and that BP violated the law by failing to submit required revisions, it marginalizes these problems and shifts the blame to BP contractors. BOEMRE’s own regulations require that it maintain as-built drawings. It did not do this.
“With this report BOEMRE has applied an incorrect and arbitrary reading of its own regulations, applying certain rules only to certain parts of the Atlantis facility. It lets BP off the hook and tries to justify its own inaction.
“The federal government dragged its feet on this investigation, and its findings are appalling—like a doctor’s note for a truant student. They are a weak attempt to cover BP’s foul play. After all this time, the public deserves better.”

Show AllI'll make the sarcasm short...you expected different?
So once again a whorp gets away with...ahh, let's see. Well, murder. Those 11 men who died were technically murdered by BP's negligence.
The fishing industry, the homes, the jobs, the companies, the communities, that suffered? Collateral damage. Future health problems? Collateral damage.
This, on top of everything else, we are slaves to the bourgeoisie, the fascist pigs at the top. They best start watchin their backs because some people are madder than me and meaner than me. The proletariat revolution is on...maybe. I guess we'll have to have their gun in our face before we all hit the streets.
Tks Stonepig for the brevity in sarcasm, but I think you make the important point, murder by negligence. Oh well 'another day, another dollar' as was once, a happy saying in this country.
whocares;)
"don't take any wooden nickels"
American Justice is a bloated, Corexit saturated corpse, floating in the Gulf.
What an f-in surprise.
Obama's lips so far up BP's posterior that his head has disappeared.
From Reuters News May 5, 2010 : "During his time in the Senate and while running for president, ***Obama received a total of $77,051 from the oil giant and is the top recipient of BP PAC and individual money over the past 20 years***, according to financial disclosure records."
And you wonder why BP got a walk on the Mancondo/Deepwater Horizon disaster?
Nothing to see here. Just a another Corporate whore. Move along, folks, move along.
Non Serviam - I will not serve.
Dear BP,
That was an awful mess in the Gulf. Shame on you, don't do it again.
Your obedient servant,
The Government
The government and BP have been singing a preposterous duet that amounts to "no harm, no foul" ever since the BP-made oil volcano began massively contaminating the water and seabed.
They've been shamelessly taking the Big Lie approach from Day One-- mendaciously minimizing, discounting, and scandalously denying the extent and severity of environmental damage all along
Remember when Obama supporters argued that even though his administration couldn't fix ALL of the damage done by his predecessor, at least it was putting an end to government-supported "junk science" bought and paid for by corporations?
That dream is rotting along with all of the dolphins, out of sight and out of mind in the briny deep.
Yea, verily, yea!
Well said, as always by OS. This comes at the same time as we hear of the Republican attack on EPA standards, abysmal as they already are, and the gutting of every single environmental protection and "green" initiative allegedy issuing from the Obama admin.
So, Obama simutaneously supports a whitewashing of the BP disaster and giving Big Oil the green light to drill even deeper water wells in the Gulf, with no improvement in catastrophe avoidance, while also being under seige from Republicans over his vague efforts to explore energy alternatives, along with bogus "clean coal" rhetoric and support for nukes. Republicans want to kill all the wolves, whales, anything else that might stand in the way of profits, do away with pollution controls on the most offending industries, enshrine global warming denial as sacred truth, trash the world for profits, and do all this just to stop Obama from imposing a single feeble restriction against their God given right to plunder and profit.
He won't fight back. He never does. He's their bitch and he knows it.
So how do you stop people like the Koch brothers? How do you stop people that have no conscience, no sense of responsibility for people, land, seas, or animals of the world?
The majority of the tea party is corrupt.( Rep, Special interests, Corp.)

Nearly every avenue we have for protection of citizens, protection of the environment is completely corrupt.
We have no upper government. (See corruption above)
Our Local and municipal government has started it's corruption. (See(but not limited to) Wisconsin Governor, New Jersey Governor, and Ohio Governor.)
Why aren't we DOING something about this?
Investigations get stonewalled or bought. The Supreme court has been bought.
Our government does not and CANNOT work for us anymore.
We can't get justice or answers UNTIL WE DEMAND THEM.
You said it yourself. We have no recourse under the law.
What is really amazing is that few here saw Obama for what he is-a shill of the money interests.
Somehow, people thought he would be a savior.
He is incompetent and corrupt, a bad combination for a president of a failing nation.
Maybe it is fitting that Obama is black. Because the USA is headed in the same direction as Africa-down.
"Watchdog: Govt Safety Report Lets BP Off the Hook."
Ho hum, and so it goes...
