50,000 Endangered Species Condoms to Be Given Away on New Year's Eve
Condoms Raise Awareness About Human Overpopulation, Effects on Imperiled Plants and Animals Around the Globe
Nationwide - December 29 - On New Year’s Eve, 50,000 Endangered Species Condoms will be handed out around the country as part of the Center for Biological Diversity’s campaign to raise awareness about the devastating impacts of human overpopulation and overconsumption on endangered species and their habitats.
Who: More than 600 volunteers around the country will be handing out the condoms. Many of them will be available for media interviews.
Why: The world’s population has nearly doubled since 1970 and is soon expected to top 7 billion. This staggering increase and the massive consumption it drives are overwhelming the planet’s finite resources and increasingly pushing endangered plants and animals closer to extinction.
About the Condoms: More than 350,000 Endangered Species Condoms were distributed by thousands of volunteers in 2010 as part of the Center’s overpopulation campaign. Because New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest days of the year for condom use, 50,000 were sent to volunteers earlier this month for distribution on Friday. Six different packages with original artwork and slogans feature the polar bear (“Wrap with care, save the polar bear”), jaguar (“Wear a jimmy hat, save the big cat”), American burying beetle (“Cover your tweedle, save the burying beetle”), snail darter (“Hump smarter, save the snail darter”), coquí guajón rock frog (“Use a stopper, save the hopper”), and spotted owl (“Wear a condom now, save the spotted owl”). All six species are listed as threatened or endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

wow, randy! this should give us all reason to sit up and take notice. for many out there, the subject of managing our own population seems to be the last taboo to fall. this must come from the wisdom of the people as our governments are corrupted, our society too bias. i think the condoms a great idea. i have a son on college break and what could be better than presenting this message to those about to begin a family. this, i believe to be the underlying key to begin solving most of huMANity's problems. from prince charles i picked up the term, "living in harmony with Nature." the telescope is upside down and especially white america believes we're god's gift to Nature when in all truth, it's the other way around.
somehow we need to tap in on that selfish gene led astray by a capitalist consumer ideal of owning more stuff brings happiness. maybe they'll get off the thrown and do something once they realize it's for the sake of our own health, for the sake of our own economy and for the sake of posterity, KNOW all are enriched who live within a rich and biologically diverse environment.
save the world
save the frog!
'Use a stopper and save the hopper." That's great. Humans have already killed off the golden toad, and the harelquin frog isn't doing so well either.
They forgot bees though. How about 'Use a ringer and save the stinger." or "Wrap it sonny and save the honey."
What a great idea! Collect then all, and USE THEM!

Who wants to talk to a condom?
Who wants to talk to a condom? Seems to me we have dickheads in the media talking to us all the time - I think we could do well by putting an impervious rubber bag over a lot of them.
That aside, it's been pretty solidly established that the way to reduce the birth rate is to increase the power that women have to make fundamental life choices of all kinds - 'raise their standard of living' without linking this to consumerism. If we're going to wreck all the world's economies, I think it's reasonable to expect that the birth rate not go down, and I don't think condoms are going to fix that.
I think that if we start to dismantle Social Security, that a fair number of Americans will start seeing a larger crop of children as their only hope for elder care.
