Equality California Applauds Repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

WASHINGTON - December 22 - Today, President Obama signed into law legislation repealing the so-called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military policy that denies lesbian, gay, and bisexual Americans the right to serve openly in the U.S. armed forces. In response, Mario Guerrero, U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Equality California Government Affairs Director released the following statement:

“The repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ is a triumphant victory and a huge step forward in the fight for full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.  As a former service member, I know all too well the injustices of this discriminatory policy, and I am thrilled that brave lesbian, gay and bisexual soldiers will finally be able to serve our nation openly and with respect they deserve. In the interim, we urge Defense Secretary Robert Gates to suspend current investigations and discharges required under ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’

“We extend our gratitude to President Obama and the members of Congress who fought for the passage of this bill. Now it is critical that Congress continues to champion the repeal of another piece of legislation that requires the federal government to discriminate against LGBT Americans – the Defense of Marriage Act. We also call on Congress to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act to bring us closer to our nation’s promise of equally for all.
