D.C. Court Hearing to Decide Endangered Species Act Status for Polar Bear

WASHINGTON - October 19 - A federal court hearing on challenges to the Endangered Species Act listing for the polar bear. The Center for Biological Diversity, Greenpeace and the Natural Resources Defense Council argue the polar bear should be listed as “endangered” rather than merely “threatened,” while the state of Alaska and other parties argue the bear is not imperiled and should not be protected at all. At the time of listing, the Bush administration issued a special rule exempting greenhouse gases from regulation under the Endangered Species Act. Such a rule can only be issued for a species listed as threatened, not endangered.
