Statement by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on June Jobs Report
Republicans stubbornly refuse to recognize that the private sector's job-creating machine is dead in the water, creating only 83,000 jobs last month. In the Senate this week, every Democrat but one voted to extend unemployment benefits and all but two Republicans voted to block those same benefits. Overall, the economy shed 125,000 jobs in June as the Census reduced its temporary workforce. The unemployment rate fell to 9.5 percent in June, but only because 652,000 workers left the labor force.
The economic recovery is still far too weak to power the job growth we need to offset the almost 8 million jobs lost since the recession began. Meanwhile, 14.6 million workers are formally unemployed, and nearly half of them have been unemployed for more than 26 weeks.
Every effort to dig us out of our 10.5 million jobs hole is being stymied by excuses about the deficit. This is not to say the federal budget doesn't need attention—it does, but over the long term. Right now we have an immediate jobs crisis. And unless we address it soon, we'll only make the nation's economic conditions worse.
It is a national disgrace that members of Congress are heading home to celebrate our nation's birthday after having voted repeatedly NOT to create jobs or to extend unemployment aid. All Americans have been impacted by our jobs crisis, with some families bearing multiple burdens of job loss, foreclosures, and benefit cuts. We're teetering on the brink of a historic national and global depression. And congressional Republicans are pushing closer and closer to the edge.

Show AllMr. Trumpka, if the AFL-CIO is truly interested in creating jobs in America, it should be pressing the Obama administration to institute a tariff system on all goods coming into America. Putting tariffs on unassembled and finished products coming into this country would #1 protect American jobs that are still here in America from undercutting in price from foreign competition. #2 It would force so called American corporations to decide if they want access to the American market or not. Either these American corporations such as Apple, GM, Ford, Motorola, Maytag, NIKE and Boeing just to name a very few can accept at least a 25% if not higher tariff on parts manufactured or complete assemblies built overseas and imported into the United States which could very well price their products out of reach of the average American, (The average American, NOT CONSUMER) they will have a choice to make, gamble that the American people will be willing to pay the extra money for their products and that some entrepreneur doesn't come along and decide that he can manufacture the same product here for the same or lower price in the United States using American labor instead of foreign labor to make that product. Or they could bring the jobs that they moved overseas back to the U.S. and not have to worry about the tariff on their products, while knowing that with the tariffs in place, they would have a level playing field with their foreign competition!
The American people need to remember that when Americans lose jobs to countries over seas, it not only means that another family here becomes dependent on the state for their survival, it deprives local and state governments of much needed tax revenue, revenue which goes to pay for schools, water and sewage, trash collection and fire and police protection. Just look around you, where ever you live in the U.S., a large majority of local municipalities and state governments are cutting back on essential services to balance their budgets.
One last thought, Wal-Mart gets many of the products they sell to Americans from Red China, every product that Apple sells here in the U.S. is manufactured in Red China. In case you have forgotten, Red China is a Communist country which uses cheap labor and forced labor to manufacture products for American companies. So just remember, the next time you go to Wal-Mart or sit around playing with your iPad or iPhone, you are directly supporting a Communist government that is bent on the destruction of your way of life.
