Americans Are Hanging on by Their Fingertips
WASHINGTON - July 1 - Today Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) made the following statement on the floor of the House in support of legislation to extend emergency unemployment benefits: "In Cleveland, where I come from, unemployment is devastating our community. People are demanding that their government, our government, recognize the suffering of families who have lost jobs and can't find work."
"Will Washington tell my constituents and people like them, all over America, ‘We have money for war but no money for the unemployed? We have money for military contractors but no money for the unemployed? We have money, billions, for corrupt foreign governments but no money for our unemployed in the United States? We have money for tax cuts for the wealthiest of Americans but no money for the unemployed? Hundreds of billions for Wall Street but no money for the unemployed?'
"Instead, the out-of-work, poor, and middle class get lectures on balancing the budget, lectures on pay-fors. What are people supposed to do when they don't have budgets because they don't have money? When they can't pay for food, shelter, and clothing? Yes, we need jobs, but people out of work can't find a job and they have to survive. People need unemployment benefits because they have to pay for their mortgage, their rent, their utility bills. So many Americans are hanging on by their fingertips. Some exhort our constituents, ‘pull yourselves up by your boot straps.' What if you don't have money to buy boots?" said Kucinich.

Show AllI wonder how long the uncorrupted and morally courageous Congressman will be able to hang on by HIS fingertips--considering the rot and decay, the very disintegration, of the institution he works for.
I know that subversive powers have been able to successfully marginalize Mr. Kuchinich over the years, but more is as stake than ever, and he seems to be getting even less and less press.
The question is, will this be his fate until he fades away? or is it possible, this time, that we can actually get off our duffs and organize enough to get him elected?!!

Who are you, Freddie Killowatt, a former CEI henchman? Dennis is absolutely right. Dennis Kucinich is honest, courageous, and not afraid to confront the issues and speak for the common man. I applaud him. I pray he is re-elected.

Yes, true, bootstraps, they do imply
that citizens have shoes.
They would if jobs weren't sent away,
our workers so abused.
The older ones--experienced,
are dissed and often told,
Your knowledge, like a dinosaur,
so your skills can't be sold.
The younger ones, those college grads,
with school loans still to fall.
They can't find work, but they do get
a mean collection call.
For those with house and family,
and no insurance too.
I guess they should sell off their kids?
Would worldwide sex trade do?
Their fingernails are all chewed down.

Really-what are we (the little people) supposed to do? There just aren't the jobs out there to be had. My boyfriend's unemployment just ran out. We have a mortgage and all sorts of bills. Lucky I own a business-which is struggling-and we have a small farm. Back when the bailout issue came up-I said the gov should send every taxpayer a check-maybe 1/2 million or so. People could have paid off their mortgages-bought a car, started a business, sent their kids to college and all that tax money would have gone right back into the coffers. The trickle up effect would have made America stronger and more prosperous. Instead, these Wall St.banksters are just trying to figure out what color to paint their new yacht.
Joe and Josephine the plumbers, et al, might reconsider their beliefs about our wars if standard news sources reported the concealed dirt in terms they could understand. Who controls the media they probably see?
Why isn't the stuff from Common Dreams in the mainstream? Would a few million from a benefactor help even the playing field?
How about a few dollars from lots of benefactors?
