AFL-CIO Issues Challenge to Congressional Candidates: Pledge to Support the Promoting American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010
WASHINGTON - May 25 - Today, the 11.5 million working women and men of the AFL-CIO called on congressional candidates to pledge their support for the Promoting American Jobs and Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010.
"Candidates often talk about jobs, now they have a chance to back up their rhetoric with action," said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.
This jobs bill will put Americans back to work by repairing crumbling infrastructure; stemming public sector layoffs in states; encouraging more bank loans to small business; extending unemployment benefits and health benefits for the unemployed through the end of this year; and providing over 300,000 summer jobs for unemployed youth.
Trumka continued, "If you're not for this bill, you're not for jobs. Period. And please, no more excuses about budget deficits unless and you're willing to make Wall Street pay its fair share to bring it down. The people who always say 'no' to jobs because of the deficit are often the same people who voted to squander our hard-earned budget surpluses so they could shower undeserved tax breaks on rich people during the Bush years. Apparently, spending money on rich people is perfectly okay, but investing in jobs for working families sets off alarm bells."
CANDIDATE PLEDGE TO SUPPORT THE PROMOTING AMERICAN JOBS AND CLOSING TAX LOOPHOLES ACT OF 2010
I pledge to help create jobs for working families by supporting the Promoting American Jobs & Closing Tax Loopholes Act of 2010. By supporting this bill I am also ending tax giveaways to big businesses that ship American jobs overseas.
