Public Citizen Urges Boycott of BP
BP Should Know That Its Irresponsibility Is Unacceptable; More Than 5,000 Have Already Signed Petition
That’s what Public Citizen is calling on the public to do in the
wake of an April 20 explosion on a BP-leased rig that is causing
210,000 gallons of oil to gush into the Gulf of Mexico every day.
Already, more than 5,000 people have signed to Take the Beyond BP
Pledge at http://www.citizen.org/boycott-bp.
“Eleven oil workers are dead. One of the largest oil spills in U.S. history continues to worsen. Yet BP continues to doubletalk on its responsibility and its liability,” said Robert Weissman, Public Citizen’s president. “BP must pay. A consumer boycott will deliver that message and give people a way to act on their anger. We are urging people to send a clear message to BP that its shoddy oversight of this project and its history of environmental and worker safety violations is unforgivable.”
The pledge asks people to boycott BP gas for three months. Public Citizen has also launched a Facebook group, “1,000,000 Strong to Boycott BP.”
“BP made a conscious decision not to install a $500,000 safety device that could have prevented the Gulf disaster,” said Tyson Slocum, director of Public Citizen’s Energy Program. “A company that made $14 billion in profits in 2009 - a bad year - refused to spend a fraction of a percent of its profits to safeguard against what is fast becoming the worst oil spill of all time. The sheer greed at the expense of safety and the environment is mind-boggling.”
BP has one of the worst environmental and safety records of any oil company operating in the U.S. BP has pleaded guilty in just the last few years to two crimes and paid more than $730 million in fines, penalties and settlements for environmental crimes, willful disregard for workplace safety and energy market manipulation. (See http://publiccitizenenergy.org/2010/05/05/cost-of-doing-business-bps-550-million-in-fines-2-criminal-convictions/ for details.)
“There are other places to buy gas,” Weissman said. “While no oil company is a stellar corporate citizen, BP is a particularly bad and irresponsible actor. We want the company to feel the extent of the public’s wrath.”
Added Slocum, “the BP disaster highlights the need to stop offshore drilling expansion and end our national addition to oil. It also emphasizes how crucial it is to hold Big Oil accountable. The BP boycott is a way to start.”

Show AllBoycott schmoycott. That's a token slap on the wrist. Their corporate charter should be voided immediately.
Yes, but how can we make that happen if we don't show our disapproval by at least starting with a boycott? I would concur that it's hardly the final solution to the problem, but rather a starting point from which to press on.
I think BP North America is headquartered in Illinois. Does anyone know where they are incorporated in the States?

Listen, they already faced the tough
questioning from those mean Senators,
have some mercy !!!!!
And ARCO too!
boblecht
I'm still boycotting Exxon-Mobile. Won't buy from them until mother nature completes the cleanup they abandoned.
Good grief. If I boycott BP too, I'll have to drive 4 or 5 more blocks to the Citgo station. At least Chavez seems to be drilling responsibly...compared to his competition.
Doesn't boycotting also mean NOT buying plastics, etc.?
From Democracy Now! headlines:
Massachusetts Town Bans Sale of All Bottled Water
The town of Concord, Massachusetts has become the first town in the United States to ban the sale of all bottled water. The ban was spearheaded by the eighty-two-year-old activist Jean Hill. She told the Boston Globe, "All these discarded bottles are damaging our planet, causing clumps of garbage in the oceans that hurt fish, and are creating more pollution on our streets."
You know how many times I pull a half full bottle of water out of the trash and empty it on the ground. We should all do this. Water is FINITE. If it sits in bottles on store shelves in billions of gallons, it will not return to the skies. If it gets thrown away, sealed for all time, one day we will be mining landfills to release trapped water, to quench an already man made drought. This means Gatorade, coke, beer, baby formula ! Anything whose principal ingredient is water, needs to be emptied or consumed and peed out. Grass clippings in plastic bags are mostly water. trapped in plastic. Free the moisture ! Do you want to be wearing Stillsuits and recycling urine and feces ? Mixing oil spill disgust and bottle water contempt in one discussion ! This is oil and water mixing.
BP= BEYOND PROFANITY!
Could BP ( reading back a timeline here) be responsible for part of the troubles with Iran and the Middle East?
Anglo-Persain oil , into Anglo- Iran, the BP, which then gobbles up Standard Oil, Arco and Conoco?
Of course we have to factor in BP being British and all, and getting Churchill and the U.S. and CIA to overthrow a DEMOCRATIC government of Iran to get at that oil. Weren't they said to be fighting "communism" then? I guess it had NOTHING to do with OIL?)
Then we have the viscious shah overthrown by the "people" who are unfortunately taken over by THEOCRACY!
Thanks a lot BIG OIL, your entangling alliances have sucked us into more than one oily cesspool of war.
Coveting NATURAL Resources can lead to such UNNATURAL acts! Yes, United States, we have made the 'WORLD SAFE FOR OILOCRACY, " but not very safe for people, animals and EVERY living thing.
ARCO, you're in my neighborhood, but NO LONGER in my life.
Well said stardust!!!!
The truth is what Americans cant believe.
Americans cant handle the truth, and are brain washed into believing lies.
And its easy for the oilcracy to do it , half our nation is functional illiterate and learn everything they know from TV.
We are not a democracy or a republic, we do not have a functioning constitution.
Warrant less surveillance with immunity is a billion dollar industry with private contracts under the DOD AND DHS, community watch vigilante gang stalking torture networks lead by fire fighters and ems workers are a cancer on our nation , and habeas corpus is still suspended.
If that isn't a formula for creating a stazi regime , what is it.
Bornfreemen , Torture victim of the United Stazi of America. 24/7 three years and running.
I am not a citizen of the United Stazi of America. AND DAMN PROUD OF IT.
Try riding a bike.
