Members of Congress Propose Bill to Strip Citizenship From American Terrorism Suspects
WASHINGTON - May 6 - Senators Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) and Scott Brown (R-MA) and Congressmen Jason Altmire (D-PA) and Charlie Dent (R-PA)today introduced legislation that would strip American citizenship from Americans who have not been convicted of any crimes and are suspected of being involved with terrorism organizations. The bill would direct the State Department, which designates groups as terrorist organizations, to determine if a suspect is involved with or working for such an organization and whether or not to remove a suspect's citizenship.
The American Civil Liberties Union strongly opposes the bill which does not comply with basic due process protections.
The following can be attributed to Laura W. Murphy, Director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office:
"This proposal is unconstitutional and ineffective. Removing one's citizenship is a terribly serious act with far-reaching implications, and it is especially egregious when based upon suspicion and a potentially erroneous determination made by individuals without any constitutional determination of guilt. This bill turns the whole notion of due process on its head.
"This bill is a transparent attempt to circumvent the Constitution and the criminal justice system. Removing citizenship from a suspect would raise the likelihood that he would be tried in the discredited military commissions rather than our federal criminal courts which have a proven track record of successfully handling hundreds of terrorism-related cases.
"This bill is simply a political stunt that accomplishes nothing to prevent terrorism and will simply waste the time of Congress and government officials charged with protecting the country. This bill has no place in a democracy, and should be declared dead on arrival."

Show AllLieberman and McCain are the ones that should have their
citizenship removed.
What? Lose their Israeli passports?
Lieberman is one of the most vile, detestable congressman in office... Every time I see him I feel like slapping the living shit out of him...When I hear him open that oversized mouth of his I want to puke... He is nothing but A "Nancy little fuck for Israel" and has the blood of thousnads of Palestinians on his hands...When he ran with Gore in 2000 I strongly feel that the outrage over the SCOTUS/Bush coup-d'-etat' was minnimalized because of him being on the ticket...
Common Dreams readers are probably not likely to believe me, but I have been Through This process. I don't want to expose all the details, it is painful to recall. First I went to a law library and spent weeks reading every federal decision WRT citizenship and its loss. I framed my case in writing and had the guts to take the State Department to Federal Court. I won. The judge was appalled by what had happened to me, ordered my citizenship restored, and a U.S. passport couriered to me post haste.
When the government shoves, you're toast if you don't shove back as hard as you can. Don't tread on me.

How do Liberman and McCain feel about FINANCIAL TERRORISTS? Where would we put "Bernie," and who would take him?
They are assuming that all terrorists come from somewhere else. Should native born Americans lose their citizenship too?
You should be very careful, Liberman and McCain, because once you open the door on this, who knows who will be pushed through.
