Cuéntame Launches Nationwide "Do I Look Illegal" Campaign
Arizona's Draconian Immigration Law Creates a Wave of Latino Social Network Activism
LOS ANGELES - April 30 - Following the signing of S.B. 1070 in Arizona, one of the most anti-immigrant laws in the country, Latinos have chosen to mobilize online in numbers never before witnessed. Within 24 hours of launching the "Do I Look Illegal" campaign, thousands responded on the www.facebook.com/cuentame page, placing it in the top five Latino activist sites on Facebook. The idea behind the "Do I Look Illegal" campaign is to highlight how the Arizona law essentially legalizes the discrimination and persecution of the Latino community through racial profiling.

"The response to the Arizona law proves that Latinos have arrived to the world of social media activism. This campaign represents the first major Latino mobilization in light of the 2010 mid-term elections. Within hours of the launch of our campaign, thousands flocked to our Cuéntame Facebook page within a matter of hours, highlighting the fact that Latinos are hungry and ready to participate in online social network activism." Axel Woolfolk, Co-founder of Cuéntame
"Latinos from the US and Mexico have represented a strong economic engine for Arizona through its tourism industry. However, in response to this law, we will be asking our followers to take their dollars to other states, where Latinos are welcome and their dollars are wanted." Ofelia Yanez, Co-Founder of Cuéntame
Thousands of social network activists have purchased the "Do I Look Illegal" T-shirts and are spreading the message of the campaign online via status updates, pictures, and other social media tools. Cuéntame continues to plan actions in Arizona and Los Angeles with on-the-ground organizations to protest S.B. 1070.
Cuéntame has also decided to join the national boycott efforts of Arizona and will be asking many of its followers to cancel travel plans and business in Arizona.
