Amnesty International Will Demonstrate In Support of Mexican Women Who Have Waited Nearly 4 Years for Justice After Being Beaten and Sexually Assaulted

WASHINGTON - March 5 - Amnesty International will hold a rally at the Mexican consulate in Washington D.C. to support women in San Salvador Atenco, Mexico, who were brutally beaten and raped in 2006 after being taken into custody when police officers responded to a protest staged by a peasant organization.

Despite an investigation identifying 34 police officers, the women of Atenco have yet to see the violent perpetrators brought to justice for their crimes. Rallies will take place in selected cities across the country on Monday, March 8, International Women's Day, to highlight Mexico's dismal human rights record.

The rally will feature passionate activists with brightly-colored signs and banners in both English and Spanish. Amnesty International will also deliver petitions with hundreds of signatures to the embassy to remind the Mexican government that the women of San Salvador Atenco will not be forgotten, and that they deserve justice now.
