Greenpeace Statement on President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize

'You Won It. Now Earn It.'

OSLO, Norway

On the eve of President Obama's Nobel Prize ceremony in Oslo, Norway, Damon Moglen, Greenpeace USA's climate campaign director released the following statement:
"President Obama, in part, has been awarded the Nobel Prize with the expectation that he will deliver the kind of leadership necessary to get a climate treaty responsive to the climate crisis faced by people around the world.

"As the President prepares to receive this most prestigious award in Oslo, less than 500 kilometers away in Copenhagen all the pieces are in place for him to earn the honor by signing a fair, ambitious and legally binding deal.

"In short, he won it, and now is the time to earn it."

Greenpeace is calling for a multilateral legally binding deal to be signed by Obama which includes:

-Emissions cuts of 40% by 2020 by industrialised countries (at 1990 levels)

-$140 billion a year from the industrialised world for developing countries to deal with climate impacts, act on climate change and stop deforestation

-An end of tropical deforestation by 2020.

-Developing countries must reduce their projected emissions growth by 15-30% by 2020, with support from industrialised countries.

Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future.
