Farm Sanctuary Appoints Distinguished Nonprofit Leader as New Executive Director

Dr. Allan Kornberg to Lead Nation’s Leading Farm Animal Protection Organization

WATKINS GLEN, NY - September 25 - Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, announced publically today the appointment of a new executive director, Allan E. Kornberg, M.D. Farm Sanctuary’s Board of Directors selected the Boston-based pediatrician for the position following a comprehensive and wide-ranging search process for a leader who could take the nonprofit to new heights.

“I am very excited to lend my executive leadership experience to an organization that has been at the forefront of the growing farm animal protection movement for nearly a quarter-century,” said Dr. Kornberg. “Farm Sanctuary pioneered farm animal advocacy long before it was on mainstream society’s radar, but thanks to their ongoing rescues, education programs, legislative and legal efforts, and public awareness campaigns, more people are now aware of the grave threat factory farming poses to animals, our health and the environment than ever before. I am proud to join Farm Sanctuary at such a pivotal moment in animal protection history, and look forward to working with my colleagues, and all our members and supporters, to expand our reach and create even greater change for farm animals.”

A lifelong animal advocate, Dr. Kornberg’s distinguished career in nonprofit management, medicine and animal advocacy has spanned more than 25 years. In addition to serving on Farm Sanctuary’s Board of Directors, Kornberg was the U.S. Executive Director of the World Society for the Protection of Animals, a major international organization based in the U.K., and has worked with numerous other advocacy groups, including the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, to end the abuses of animals in factory farms and laboratories. He has also practiced both primary care pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine as a clinician, and focused on increasing the efficiency of healthcare delivery as a top-level executive for numerous nonprofit organizations.

Dr. Kornberg most recently served as Senior Vice President for the National Initiative for Children’s Health Quality, and prior to this was CEO of Network Health (a Medicaid health plan serving the poor in Massachusetts). Other positions formerly held by Dr. Kornberg include Medical Director of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (also in Massachusetts), Executive Director and Medical Director for the physician-hospital organization at Scottish Rite Children’s Medical Center in Atlanta, and Chief of Emergency Medicine at Buffalo Children’s Hospital in New York. Dr. Kornberg prepared for these leadership roles by pursuing a solid foundation of multidisciplinary education, which includes an undergraduate degree from M.I.T, a medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and an M.B.A. from the University of Rochester.

Gene Baur, co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary, said “As a national nonprofit dedicated to protecting billions of farm animals from an inherently abusive industrial food production system, we need a leader with the vision, knowledge and strength to face major challenges head-on and consolidate our efforts for maximum impact. Fortunately for us, Dr. Allan Kornberg has all of these attributes and many more. His combination of demonstrated success as a nonprofit leader, in-depth knowledge of vegan health and nutrition, and profound compassion for animals makes him a perfect fit for this key position at Farm Sanctuary.”
