Amnesty International's Sri Lanka Experts Available for Interviews
Sri Lanka Country Specialist Jim McDonald, Middle East/North Africa Advocacy Director Zahir Janmohamed Available to Comment on Human Rights Concerns in the Country
WASHINGTON - May 11 - The following Amnesty International
experts are available to comment on the ongoing human rights crisis in
Sri Lanka:
Jim McDonald, Sri Lanka country specialist
McDonald has served as the organization's country specialist on Sri Lanka for almost two decades and has testified on behalf of Amnesty International before the U.S. Congress on the ongoing conflict there. He is a lawyer and a long-time human rights activist.
McDonald has traveled extensively throughout Asia and the South Pacific. Currently, he writes about the dire humanitarian crisis in the Wanni region of Sri Lanka on the organization's blog "Human Rights Now!". To see his posts, visit: http://blog.amnestyusa.org/.
Zahir Janmohamed, advocacy director for the Middle East and North Africa
At Amnesty International, Janmohamed helps coordinate the organization's lobbying and community organizing on Middle East/North Africa-related issues. In addition, he also focuses on Sri Lanka. He has traveled and worked extensively in South Asia and worked on a film project in Pakistan on sectarian violence.
Previously, Janmohamed worked for the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy where he organized conferences in Nigeria and Sudan on the democratization process. In 2002, he was an eyewitness to the communal violence in Gujarat, India that left thousands of Muslims dead. He has since spoken at more than 25 universities and his articles have been published in more than 30 publications.
