Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki leading delegation of 3,000 cities to Non-Proliferation Treaty Conference at United Nations

UNITED NATIONS - May 4 - Mayors for Peace, a global network of 2,870 cities (over 130 U.S. cities) in 134 countries and regions, will be lobbying UN diplomats for complete nuclear disarmament by 2020 during the Non-Proliferation Treaty Preparatory Committee (NPT PrepCom) starting at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday.  The delegation of cities will be headed by Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, Mayor of Hiroshima and President of Mayors for Peace, and Mr. Tomihisa Taue, Mayor of Nagasaki and Vice President of Mayors for Peace.  This year's NPT PrepCom will make final preparations for the 2010 NPT Review Conference where government delegates have to strike a balance between non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament.

WHO:  Dozens of mayors will present a tall stack of boxes with almost 500,000 signatures to UN High Representative Sergio Duarte.  They will also present progress on the “Cities Appeal in support of Hiroshima Nagasaki Protocol,” a proposed protocol complementary to the NPT which envisions a nuclear-weapon-free world by 2020.

The Mayors for Peace is composed of cities around the world that have formally expressed support for the program Mayor Araki announced in 1982. As of May 1, 2009, membership stood at 2,870 cities in 134 countries and regions. In March 1990, the Mayors Conference was officially registered as a UN NGO related to the Department of Public Information. In May 1991, it became a Category II NGO (currently called a NGO in "Special Consultative Status") registered with the Economic and Social Council. http://www.mayorsforpeace.org
