Poverty Policy

WASHINGTON - January 23 -

GWENDOLYN MINK
Co-editor of the two-volume Poverty in the United States: An Encyclopedia of History, Politics and Policy and author of Welfare's End, Mink said today: "The Administration for Children and Families is THE critical agency for low-income families with children: It is the administrative center of federal poverty policy. Given its reach into family life and family structure, ACF has special significance for low-income MOTHERS -- their daily lives and associations, as well as their opportunities (via TANF; Head Start; Child Care; Child Support; Child Welfare; Marriage & Fatherhood Promotion; etc). It is a matter of great urgency to put at the helm of ACF a progressive feminist with a proven track record of social justice policy advocacy. This would at long last usher in real change -- away from punishing low-income mothers and children and towards investing in their income security and economic equality."
