The National Lawyers Guild Condemns Illegal Israeli Massacre of over 300 Gazans
Calls for Ceasefire and Urges Participation in Protests
WASHINGTON - December 29 - The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) condemns Israel's massive bombardment of the Gaza Strip which has left over 300 dead and 1,400 wounded, with the tolls mounting. The Israeli Air Force dropped more than 100 bombs in dozens of locations throughout the Gaza Strip as children left school on Saturday. The dead include men, women and children in school uniforms.
"International law forbids the targeting of civilians," said Radhika Sainath, a civil rights attorney and member of the Free Gaza Committee of the NLG. "Israel must comply with laws of war and the Fourth Geneva Convention." Today's massacre marks an escalation of Israel's two-year blockade of the Strip which has deprived 1.5 million Palestinians of necessary food, medicine, fuel and other necessities. In November 2008, the United Nations stated that it had run out of food to feed over 750,000 needy Gazans.
Israel claims that the attack is in response to Palestinian rocket fire, which caused no recent Israeli deaths and few injuries. However, Israel's "rolling bombardment" and impending ground invasion is grossly disproportionate in light of the minimal damage caused by Palestinian rockets. "The law of war prohibits collective punishment and the targeting of a civilian population disproportionate to military necessity. Israel has flouted both these prohibitions, that follow its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory and its sealing of Gaza, subjecting Gazans to near starvation," said Marjorie Cohn, NLG president and a professor of international law at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. "The Human Rights and Security Assistance Act mandates that the United States cease all military aid to Israel, which has engaged in a consistent pattern of gross violations of internationally recognized human rights."
Israeli military spokesman Avi Benayahu stated that the Israeli bombardment of Gaza was "only just the beginning," showing utter contempt for international norms and the lives of innocent Palestinians. The Guild calls on the entire international community, and the United States in particular, to demand an end to Israel's blockade of the Occupied Territories and its murderous assault on the Palestinian people. We urge everyone to join in the demonstrations planned across the country in opposition to this latest attack on the rule of law by Israel and we call on both sides to immediately reinstate the cease fire.
Founded in 1937 as an alternative to the American Bar Association, which did not admit people of color, the National Lawyers Guild is the oldest and largest public interest/human rights bar organization in the United States. Its headquarters are in New York and it has chapters in every state.

Show AllBring America Back !!!! Many Thanks to the NLG for the condemnations and
protests ongoing of the Israeli Genocide and Massacre of Gazans !!!!
***As humans, would we not think that Israel, of all Nations, would hold
sacred the prevention of the massacres which their Nation endured at
the Nazi Holocaust !! Rather, and instead we find Jewish modern history
holding to the behsviour of doing to others what they did to the Jews !!
****Israel keeps proving this time after time.....Lebanon, Gaza, Lebanon,
Syria, West Bank, Egypt, USS Liberty, 9/11.
****World opinion does want to stop Israel, censure Israel, punish Israel.
The tail continues to wag the Dog. Hopefully, some day it won't !!!!
Nostradamus predicted the world will be in utter chaos by 2012, or come to and end.Something like that.
Why wait, lets have a nuke fest, Russia,India,Pakistan,Israel and America.
This is how it will play out. Israel will nuke Iran, Gaza ,West bank,Lebanon, Syria and Jordan- India will nuke Pakistan, Pakistan will nuke India and Afghanistan (accidently) , Russia and America will nuke each other.
Iraq will suffer from nuclear fall out.
win, win. All wars will come to an end and Israel will be left to deal with China and Korea for world supremacy of the survivors of nuclear holocaust.
Then Jesus will come back down from the heavens and cure everyone of insanity, cleans the earth, and make us pure and healthy.
BornFreeMen
Whats the definition of insanity? I keep forgetting. I know its not diplomacy.
TWith great respect; all of these comments have threads of truth running through them; but should we not recognise the truth that sits on the foundation beneath it all?
There are two immovable forces opposed to one another, each believes they have the monopoly over "right and justice" for their beliefs, neither will bend to the extent necessary to create a lasting peace.
The only solution, as even Saddam demonstrated,is an imposed one, maintained by force and threat of death, torture, or dishonour.
The hate and discontent continues and is deferred for future generations to resolve.
Israel has endured the rain of hundreds of explosive rockets; a situation they could not be expected to accept; Hamas knew that and they now have the response they wanted, Israel's brutal retaliation. Hamas wants world opinion to turn in their favour; they are quite prepared to sacrifice their own civilians for this end. It is a cowardly act for a soldier to shelter behind unarmed civilians, unless those civilians accept their risk, if so, they are then part of the sheltering army. No tears and sympathy necessary.
Israel has been underestimated, for they will now impose, what for them , will be a final solution. The World will never go to war in support of the palestinians no matter how just their cause, the risks of major conflicts are too great.
The Palestinians deserve their Homeland every bit as much as anyone else; did not a large slice of Palestine end up in Jordan? The point is that much unwinding would be necessary to arrive at a position acceptable to all. It is not going to happen in our life times, if ever.
So we come back to present day solutions. The cycle of violence and temporary cease fires could go on for ever; there is no intention for them to bear fruit.
Finally, those responsible for supply of rockets to Hamas bear great responsibility for what is now going down, they should be found and prosecuted; some are saying it is the CIA because it suits US policy in the middle east to have continuing conflicts and to allow, justify, the imposition of Israel's final solution. Your argument, no matter how well and articulately worded, is supported only by the absurd concept that the establishment of Israel 60 years ago by the UN was legal, and most importantly binding.
I was not, and at that time the weaponry which has become dangerously common now, did not exist, and what did exist was in the hands of a few who wielded it with uncommon bias.
Whatever the resolution is, it will not be settled by the Palestinian people giving their land to anyone. The people of Israel are much the same as the person who is "given" a stolen Horse, only to find that the Horse rightfully belongs to another, and they are faced with returning the property to the rightful owner.
Considering how the Israelis have conducted themselves these past 60 years, when they could have handled the matter with a different approach using the lessons they learned through at least two millennia of existence. Instead they used the lessons they learned at the hands of others and mastered the skills of a cruel and heartless dominating force. Now they are faced with the reality that the Palestinians will not give up, and are will use the same blind force and violence upon the Israelis that the Israelis have used upon them.
In the end the only true losers will be the Israelis. They have already begun to lose the support of a majority of the other nations, and there most wealthy Allie, the USA is in a spiral downward that may very well leave them unable to assist in the genocide and destruction that the Israelis have criticized others for in the past.
