Consumer Product Reform Legislation Conference
Meeting Set for Thursday, July 17, 2008
Whistleblower Protection Provisions In Jeopardy

WASHINGTON - July 16 - House and Senate members will meet in conference tomorrow to discuss the Consumer Product Safety Reform Bill, H.R. 4040. It is expected that the future of the whistleblower provisions of this law will be decided at this time.

This Legislation is Congress’ response to the massive consumer product recalls, on everything from lead-laden children’s toys to toxic toothpaste, which had angered Americans and prompted calls for reform.

The most important aspect of this legislation is protection for whistleblowers. Other provisions of the bill, such as increasing the Consumer Product Safety Commission budget to add hundreds of new regulators and inspectors, can only be effective if these employees have the freedom to tell the truth about defective and dangerous products.

In a letter to the Members of the Conference, Stephen M. Kohn, the President of the National Whistleblower Center stated:

For this new law to work, we must have eyes and ears on the factory floors. These are the eyes and ears of honest employees, and without protection they cannot alert us to the dangerous or defective products that will end up on our supermarket shelves.
