Constitution Project Welcomes Vigilance in Consideration of Surveillance

WASHINGTON, DC - October 31 - Today the Constitution Project welcomed the Senate Committee on the Judiciary's cautious review of proposed amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The Committee was convened this morning to hear testimony on "FISA Amendments: How to Protect Americans' Security and Privacy and Preserve the Rule of Law and Government Accountability."
"The Judiciary Committee's cautious review of a law that would empower the government to spy on American citizens is encouraging," said Sharon Bradford Franklin, senior counsel at the Constitution Project. "In rushing to consider the Protect America Act last summer, Congress sacrificed fundamental Constitutional values for the mere appearance of improved safety. Congress has an obligation to the American people to ensure that it does not repeat such a grave mistake."
The Constitution Project's Liberty and Security Committee previously issued a "Statement on the Protect America Act," which called on Congress to not reauthorize the "overbroad and harmful provisions of the PAA."
