the United Nation's Failure to End Deaths By Starvation

NEW YORK - September 17 -

What: PROTEST: Activists from around the world will protest the United Nation's failure to end deaths by starvation, calling for hunger and the right to food to be addressed as political priorities at the UN General Assembly Meetings.

Ibrahima Niasse: Head of Senegal's Farmers' Platform, will speak on poverty and hunger in his homeland.
AFM Shahidur Rahman: Head, Livelihood security and Risk Reduction Sector of ActionAid Bangladesh, will speak on the surmounting challenges faced by women without land.
Thomas Johnny: Policy Research and Advocacy Manager from ActionAid Sierra Leone, will speak on the threats of hunger in post-conflict nations.

Where: Ralph Bunche Plaza, 1st Avenues, between 42nd 43rd Streets

35,000 people die of hunger every day. ActionAid's HungerFREE campaign, which spans more than 30 countries, calls on governments to deliver on their Millennium Development Goal to halve hunger by 2015, by ensuring that they respect, protect and fulfill the right to food; strengthen corporate regulations; expose companies when they exploit poor people; and protect poor women's access to land.

Notes to editors: The official opening of the 62nd UN General Assembly is on September 18th. The September 18th HungerFREE protest launches a week of actions. These will take place daily September 18th - 21st from 1:15-3:00 PM at Ralph Bunche Plaza.
