Iraq: Rehabilitation Works in Basrah

GENEVA - August 29 - Last week, the ICRC handed over to the Directorate of Sewage two completed projects: a pipeline to evacuate the sewage of the Hay Al-Hussein quarter and a disposal channel located in the same quarter serving more than 450,000 people. "These repair projects, added to the rehabilitation works on three major water treatment plants in the Southern city completed this year, will help improve the health and hygiene conditions of the inhabitants", said Javier Cordoba, the ICRC water and habitat coordinator for Iraq. "They are in line with the ICRC's efforts to mitigate the impact of conflict on the daily life of Iraqis and to respond to emergencies wherever they arise", he added. Today, the ICRC completed the rehabilitation of the mortuary fridges at Basrah's medico-legal institute, allowing it to store up to 90 bodies at a time. A few months ago, the ICRC also rehabilitated the mortuaries of Basrah's Al-Faiha hospital. ###
