NAACP, Oxfam America Sponsor Mississippi Day of Action to Focus Attention on the Gulf Coast Recovery
 

NEW YORK - August 24 -

WHAT: A day of action, including a town hall meeting, an exhibit featuring the work of an award-winning "TIME" magazine photographer, and a community walk-through, will draw attention to the ongoing challenges residents face in rebuilding their Gulf Coast communities.

WHEN: Saturday, Aug. 26 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

WHERE: Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi

WHO: Organized by Oxfam America and the NAACP with support from the Steps Coalition. Guests will include actor/activist Danny Glover; Bruce Gordon, president of the NAACP; Raymond C. Offenheiser, president of Oxfam America; community advocates; and state officials. Moderator for the town hall meeting is George Curry, editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

-- Community Walk-Through: "Steps Through the Communities"

When: 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26

Where: Starting at the Isaiah Fredericks Community Center, 3312 Martin Luther King Blvd., Gulfport, Miss., the walk-through will include a tour of parts of East Biloxi, Miss.

-- Photography Exhibit

When: 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26

Where: Good Deeds Community Center, 15101 Madison St., Gulfport, Miss.

Who: Steve Liss, a veteran "TIME" magazine photojournalist, spent a month documenting the lives of families in three Gulf Coast communities.

-- Town Hall Meeting: "Envisioning a Better Mississippi"

When: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 26

Where: Good Deeds Community Center, 15101 Madison St., Gulfport, Miss.

Who: Hundreds of Gulf Coast residents will engage in a question-and-answer session following a moderator-guided discussion among a panel of national civil rights and poverty activists.
