Statement by SEIU President Andy Stern and Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger, on U.S. Vote to Ban Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights Groups from the United Nations

WASHINGTON - February 2 - “In a disgraceful reversal of policy, the U.S. joined some of the world’s most oppressive regimes in backing a United Nations initiative to silence advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.

“This vote against human rights for LGBT people betrays the democratic values that our country was founded upon and diminishes our role as leaders on the international stage.

“By aligning ourselves with countries like Iran, Sudan, and China -- regimes with shameful records of human rights abuses – we are undermining our ability to advocate for fundamental human rights principles worldwide.

“Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and UN Ambassador John R. Bolton owe Americans an explanation for this disturbing vote against basic fairness.”
