National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Applauds Senators' Call for Filibuster;
Urges Senate to Reject Samuel Alito Nomination

WASHINGTON - January 30 - Several Democratic U.S. senators, including Massachusetts Sens. John Kerry and Edward Kennedy, California Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton have voiced support for a filibuster of Samuel Alito's Supreme Court nomination. A filibuster vote will likely occur today. If it fails, Alito is poised to be confirmed tomorrow.

Statement by Matt Foreman, Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

"We salute those senators who are calling for a filibuster of Judge Samuel Alito in what is the final opportunity to block a dangerously out-of-the-mainstream judge from a lifelong seat on the nation's highest court.

"These senators understand - as do millions of Americans who support equality and fairness - that Alito's presence on the Supreme Court will lead to a radical lurch to the right. If he is confirmed, it will mark the beginning of the unraveling of many important advances this country has experienced in securing civil liberties and outlawing discrimination."
