Green Party leaders strongly urged Democrats in the U.S. Senate to filibuster the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Greens listed Judge Alito's radical ideological interpretations of the law, including his theory of 'unitary executive' power which would override constitutional restraints on the power of the President, as well as his favoritism towards corporations and his apparent hostility to environmental laws, reproductive rights, the equal protection guarantees for African Americans, and inclusion of third parties in elections. Greens expressed dismay that many Democrats have dismissed the call for a filibuster by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and will instead confirm Judge Alito.

The Green Party will stress the failure of the Democratic Party to mount an effective opposition to the Bush agenda when it presents its rebuttal to President Bush's January 31 State of the Union address and to Democrats' responses to the President's speech.

A Video News Release (VNR) of the Green rebuttal will be made available within the next two days in the form of video downloads placed on the home page of the Green Party's web site <http://www.gp.org>.

The Green Party will also send (by overnight mail) a disc of the VNR to any member of the media who requests it. The party will issue an advisory within the next two days announcing that the VNR downloads and disc are available.

Representatives of the Green Party will emphasize the party's demands to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq immediately and for an investigation and impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

Greens will also discuss the failed Medicare prescription drug bill, and will present their ideas about how to address the need for single-payer National Health Insurance, energy policy, and global warming.
