WASHINGTON -- March 24 --

WHAT: Students at over 300 universities nationwide will stage mass actions to support workers’ rights to organize and collectively bargain as a part of the National Student-Labor Week of Action, organized by the Student Labor Action Project (SLAP). Through films, rallies, the establishment of social security guards, and other demonstrations of solidarity students hope to help workers win concrete victories in their efforts to form and join unions.

WHEN: March 31 through April 4, 2005

WHERE: Students from New York to Los Angeles will be participating. Among the many schools expected to engage in mass demonstrations are:

University of Massachusetts- Amherst
University of Washington- Seattle
University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill

WHO: The Student-Labor Week of Action is organized by the Student Labor Action Project (SLAP). The Student Labor Action Project is a joint program of Jobs with Justice—a nationwide network of community-labor coalitions, and the United States Student Association—the oldest and largest organization representing students on Capitol Hill. The week is co-sponsored this year by the United Students Against Sweatshops, the American Medical Student Association, the Student/Farm worker Alliance, the National Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/o de Aztlan (MEChA), Not with Our Money, and Student Action with Farm workers.

WHY: This historic event, placed between the birthday of Cesar Chavez and the anniversary of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr’s assassination, is expected to be the largest display of national student-labor solidarity in recent history. “All students and campus workers want is dignity, support, a good education, and the ability to work in a climate that values their presence.” said Carl Lipscombe, National SLAP Coordinator.
