WASHINGTON -- December 22 -- Adele Welty, whose son, Firefighter Timothy Welty, died in the line of duty at the World Trade Center, will join a Families for Peace Humanitarian Aid Delegation bringing help to Iraqis most in need. The trip to Amman, Jordan, is being organized by Global Exchange and Code Pink, and will take place between December 27, 2004-January 4, 2005. "I'm going to help the innocent civilians who have been casualties of a war that was declared in the name of my son," Welty said. "I know that he would not want more victims injured and killed as a result of his death." The delegation also will include parents of service people killed in Iraq, including Amalia Avila of Watsonville, California, who lost her 19-year-old son, Lance Cpl. Victor Gonzalez, on October 13, 2004; Nadia McCaffrey of Percy, California, who lost her son, Sergeant Patrick McCaffrey, on June 22, 2004; and Fernando and Rosa Suarez del Solar of Los Angeles, who lost their son Jesus on March 27, 2003. While in Jordan, the delegation is scheduled to meet with representatives of humanitarian aid organizations including Alan Fellows, Political Affairs Officer with UNAMI (United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq); Anis Tarabey of CARE; Dr. Mohammed Al-Hadid, Jordan National Red Crescent Society; Mr. Sami Kakish, steering committee member of the Jordan Society for Human Rights; Dr. Joost Hiltermann, Middle East Project Director of the International Crisis Group; Christopher Beney, Head of Delegation for Iraq and ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross); and His Excellency Mr. Ahmad Obiedat (Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the National Centre for Human Rights. Welty is a member of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, a non-profit group of 150 family members of 9/11 victims which has been twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Peaceful Tomorrows' mission statement reads in part, " Acknowledging our common experience with all people affected by violence throughout the world, we work to create a safer and more peaceful world for everyone."
