Five of Eight Muslim Countries Surveyed Report Negative Image of the U.S.
 

WASHINGTON -- October 25 -- The following poll data on the image of the United States in Muslim countries was released today by D3 Systems:

In recent nationally representative surveys of Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, Bosnia, and Kosovo, a negative image of the United States prevailed in five of the eight countries. Respondents in Egypt (96 percent), Turkey (66 percent), Pakistan (65 percent), Iraq (61 percent), and Saudi Arabia (57 percent) reported having a strongly negative image of the United States. Only in Kosovo and Afghanistan did a majority of respondents report having a positive image of the United States. Muslims living in the Federation territory of Bosnia were divided in their opinions of the United States.

Question: What image do you have of the United States? Would you say it is very positive, somewhat positive, somewhat negative, or very negative?

Egypt: Positive: 2.8 Negative: 95.9

Turkey: Positive: 17.5 Negative: 66

Pakistan: Positive: 14.4 Negative: 65.1

Iraq: Positive: 35.5 Negative: 60.5

Saudi Arabia: Positive: 9.4 Negative: 56.5

Bosnia: Positive: 49.2 Negative: 45.9

Afghanistan: Positive: 65.9 Negative: 9.6

Kosovo: Positive: 95.9 Negative: 1.8

NOTES: "Positive" reflects the combination of very and somewhat positive responses, and "Negative" reflects the combination of very and somewhat negative responses.

Responses for "don't know" and refusals not shown in chart above.

Results for Bosnia reflect only the opinions of Bosnian Muslims living in the Federation and results for Kosovo reflect only Albanians. Serbs were interviewed in separate surveys.
