WASHINGTON - February 12 - "I salute Mayor Gavin Newsom today for his courageous actions which have opened the door to marriage for lesbian and gay couples in our city," said Rev. Dr. G, Penny Nixon, Senior Pastor at MCC San Francisco.
"I think this makes a fantastic early Valentine gift not just to our community but to the whole city," she said, "because when the equality of any of our citizens is affirmed, everybody wins. I am also proud that our mayor is upholding San Francisco's tradition of being at the forefront not just having progressive values, but of putting those values into action."
Nixon also offered congratulations to Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, the first lesbian couple to be married today at San Francisco City Hall: "How tremendous, that after waiting for over half a century, Phyllis and Del are finally able to have their relationship legally recognized. Our hearts rejoice with theirs today."
"At MCC San Francisco, we have been performing marriages affirming relationships like Phyllis and Del's for over 33 years," she said. "We consider it a matter of fundamental justice that couples who are united in religious marriage should be afforded equal access to civil marriage, its rights and responsibilities."
