TomPaine.com Challenges Congress to End Our
Dependence on Foreign Oil
|
|
|
| WASHINGTON
- March 26 - Never again can our addiction to foreign oil put
soldiers at risk, the Internet journal TomPaine.com, said today
in its Op Ad in The New York Times.
The ad begins:
"American troops are fighting in Iraq for many reasons. But face
it -- if foreign oil wasn't so important to us, Saddam wouldn't
be, either...." It continues with, "Think of our troops -- the
men and women whose lives are on the line because we cannot muster
the will to wean ourselves from oil."
The ad calls
on Congress, particularly the Democrats, to ensure this by emphasizing
energy independence based on conservation and alternatives.
"Democrats,
needing big ideas, could put the GOP on defense by pushing a truly
bold plan -- rapid investment in conservation and new-energy technologies,
especially solar and wind. That would enhance national security
and pay huge economic dividends -- new jobs, lower utility bills
for consumers, increased productivity, improved public health.
The job-creation
potential of such a plan could draw labor and environmentalists
together for 2004."
Moving beyond
the simple-war-for-oil critique, the ad explores the political
pressures thwarting energy independence.
As Congress
takes up this issue in the coming weeks, TomPaine.com will be
watching every move.
