Statement of U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone (D-MN) on Linda Chavez, Bushs Labor Nominee
| WASHINGTON
- January 7 - "Todays report that George W. Bushs nominee for Secretary of Labor, Linda Chavez, may have employed an illegal alien raises important and troubling questions that require close scrutiny of this nomination by Congress. The questions raised today would be important for any cabinet nominee. But since the Labor Secretary is uniquely charged with enforcing the federal labor laws and regulations that protect the rights and wages of workers in our country, these questions are especially important in this case. These questions go to the heart of our labor laws. Certainly in light of todays reports, this nomination warrants careful investigation."
